A celebration of Vista

To celebrate the long-awaited release of Windows Vista, another fine product from our fine friends at Microsoft, I downloaded and installed the most recent version of Ubuntu Linux (6.10).  I’ve wanted to replace my install of Freespire which was slow, and which I barely use, for a while now.

So, when I got in from work yesterday I was straight on the pc downloading the latest release.  On to a blank disc, reboot the machine and up comes the Ubuntu boot menu.  I’ll choose the Live CD thank you very much.

And then it failed.

Bummer.

It failed with exactly the same error as when I tried the live cd for 6.06.

Undaunted by this minor setback I booted back into XP and downloaded the alternate image. Onto a disc with this one and after a reboot… Success!

The install went smoothly and after 30 minutes (ish) I was looking at a shiny new install of Ubuntu.

So over the next few nights I’ll start tinkering with the settings and software so it becomes my general work pc.

I’ll still have to use Windows XP though.  Or at least until I can get Guild Wars running under Linux…

My friend and I saw Windows Vista Home Premium Upgrade for £19.99 in HMV yesterday. Had they put the wrong price on the boxes? Could we have made a packet by buying them for £20 and flogging them on ebay for £70? Who knows, as they weren’t there today. Bummer.

Use your mad skills and make sure all my games and stuff work under Linux so I can switch.
