A celebration of Vista

Wednesday, January 31st, 2007

To celebrate the long-awaited release of Windows Vista, another fine product from our fine friends at Microsoft, I downloaded and installed the most recent version of Ubuntu Linux (6.10).  I’ve wanted to replace my install of Freespire which was slow, and which I barely use, for a while now.

So, when I got in from work yesterday I was straight on the pc downloading the latest release.  On to a blank disc, reboot the machine and up comes the Ubuntu boot menu.  I’ll choose the Live CD thank you very much.

And then it failed.

Bummer.

It failed with exactly the same error as when I tried the live cd for 6.06.

Undaunted by this minor setback I booted back into XP and downloaded the alternate image. Onto a disc with this one and after a reboot… Success!

The install went smoothly and after 30 minutes (ish) I was looking at a shiny new install of Ubuntu.

So over the next few nights I’ll start tinkering with the settings and software so it becomes my general work pc.

I’ll still have to use Windows XP though.  Or at least until I can get Guild Wars running under Linux…

A Sad Goodbye

Tuesday, January 30th, 2007

It’s certainly a sign of the times – on Sunday we bade farewell to our piano. It was a lovely overstrung, upright piano that we had bought with money that people had very generously given us for our wedding. I already played (badly) and Heather was keen to learn. I’d be the first to admit that it probably didn’t get played nearly as much as it deserved, but it had become a bit of a fixture in our house. However, due to space restraints and the impending arrival (now less than 10 weeks away) of our firstborn, we decided to get rid of it. So on to eBay it went, and on Sunday some nice gentlemen from Fife came across and picked it up (and very efficient they were too).

Going to Mozambique, and I need your help

Wednesday, January 24th, 2007

It may sound absolutely crazy, especially given the impending birth of $child_number_one, but I’ve just had confirmation that I, along with my friends Alan and Gary, are going to Mozambique from the 14th – 21st February. It’s not a holiday – we’re going to work with a relief project in Zimpeto, just outside Maputo (the capital). They do work with people who live in the dumps, and have an orphanage, which includes work with children who are HIV positive, and we will be spending our time doing whatever we can to help.

Those of you who know me will know that I burn as soon as the heat goes above about 25 degrees C, and it’s currently >35 degrees in Maputo. Plus, I don’t have the money (what with the aforementioned baby, and all), and it’s only 2 weeks to go!

I’m looking at various avenues for raising sponsorship, but I knew that there would be some folks who would read my blog that I don’t reach in any other way. So I’ve put a PayPal button in the sidebar, and if you are able to contribute anything, then I would be extremely grateful. (The account is actually mrsBens, in case you don’t recognise the address) I need to raise money to cover my flights, visa, accommodation, etc – and I want to be able to give a contribution to the charity (other than my time and skills). All in all it will probably come to close on to £1000. But every little helps.

If you want more information about where I’m going, check out http://www.irisministries.co.uk/ and http://www.irismin.com/ministryLoc_zimpeto.cfm. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me – email is mrben -at- jedimoose -dot- org, and I’m on IRC and various Instant Messaging clients too, if you want a proper conversation ;) Last (but not least) if you’re not a fan of PayPal, but would still like to donate, please let me know, and I will give you my bank details for a funds transfer.

Ah, more time off

Monday, January 22nd, 2007

But not sick this time…

I had a week left of holiday time due to me and I have to take it before the end of March so it’s feet up time.

It’s not all rest and relaxation though, I’m hoping to get some writing done.  I have a brand new writing pad, a handful of pens and a full week to get things done.

Of course I might just spend the week sitting my pants, playing Guild Wars or Warhammer 40K: Dark Crusade.

I just don’t know. :)

Broke by dose

Friday, January 12th, 2007

Yup – I did a stupid thing. Managed to a get a foot in the face at football on Monday night, and I’ve broken my nose. It’s not particularly noticable (hasn’t ruined my rugged, manly good looks), but it hurt like crazy. Add to that the fact that I picked up some sort of evil cold/flu virus at the same time, and it hasn’t been a good week for me :(

New Antispam

Tuesday, January 9th, 2007

Well – after some continuing issues both with mail in general, but specifically with the quality of the spam filtering (or lack thereof) with PlusNet, I decided that it was time to add in some extra filtering. Enter GMail, Googles mail application. I’ve had a GMail account for a while now, although I don’t use it that much. However, it _does_ have very good spam filtering. And, even more importantly, it can forward mail for you. So I simply forward my main address to GMail, and then forward GMail to my ISP mailbox. Voila! Instant spam filtering that actually works!

Roundup Post

Thursday, January 4th, 2007

Just a few holiday matters to clear up:

BigAl, GuyIncognito and I went off for some post-Christmas, pre-New Year beers at Bier Halle, and once again partaked in the drinking of Moosehead, and hatched a (beer fuelled) plan to try and get some of their merchandise – personally I like their Beer Holster, which would be perfect for BBQs! However, if any of my readers lives in Canada and would like to fill in their questionnaire and get a free poster, I will happily pay postage to the UK for said poster ;)

YLUG and I (and fellow yorkshire #lugradio folk too) went for a few beers at the excellent Ko-Ko bar (on Goodramgate in the centre of York) – fantastic range of “forrin’” beers, including the wonderful Kwak, and the awesome Golden Draak. It was great fun, and a hearty thank you to the folks who helped organise it (especially Xalior, sheepeatingtaz, Essk and Arby).

Lastly, I mentioned it in the blogmarks, but it’s worth blogging too – there is a petition against software patents in the UK – this is a huge thing, and I thoroughly urge you to sign this petition. Get it here (UK residents only, I’m afraid). If you’re unsure as to why software patents are bad, then drop me an email, or post a comment.
