Kneejerkers are evil!

Wednesday, September 27th, 2006

I am consistently amazed about the ability of the public and politicians to make knee-jerk reactions. Richard Hammonds accident last week prompted (again!) calls for Top Gear to be banned.

Top Gear is, I think, the finest car program on the TV. It’s unashamedly for petrolheads, and is massively entertaining. Accidents _do_ happen, and I realise that this was a serious one. But it was done in a controlled environment, with plenty of safety management, and Hammond was well aware of the risks he was taking. And it’s a darn site better than, say, Big Brother.

I, for one, despite all my beliefs and morals, do *not* want to live in a world like in Demolition Man.

So I present to you the Top Gear Petition – just to make it known that not everyone is jerking their knees.

Star Wars Fact File for one lucky winner

Monday, September 25th, 2006

Back when I had not much more money than I do now, but considerably less sense, I bought the Star Wars Fact File, one of those partworks that tend to go on and on and on…

Initially it was only to last 75 or so issues (apparently) and went on much longer than that.

Now I’m clearing stuff off my shelves and I’m afraid the fact file has a destiny that lies along a different path to mine.

So if anyone wants it (all 7 folders worth with only a few issues missing) then leave a comment and I’ll get back to you.

It’s good stuff covering the whole period covered in the computer games, books, comics and (of course) the films. It’s an incredible wealth of knowledge with a painstaking attention to detail.

And it could be all yours for the rock bottom price of… Absolutely nothing!

Viral marketting from Alpha

Monday, September 25th, 2006

I was quite surprised when I saw that the Alpha Course Website had been running a competition for viral ads. How very, well, ‘modern’ and intarweb of them.

Here’s the winning entry :)

Things to do tonight….

Thursday, September 21st, 2006

1. Watch Firefly on the Sci-Fi channel.

That’s it.

If you haven’t seen it yet (are you mad?!?) then Sci-Fi is airing Firefly on Thursday nights at 2100 and repeated on Sunday nights at 1900. If you’re lucky enough to have Sci-Fi then you should really check this out – you won’t regret it.

Footnote: As pointed out to me by neuro on IRC, this is not the first time that Sci-Fi have aired Firefly (nor will it be the last). So shoot me. Besides, it was Malcolm Reynolds’ birthday yesterday, and it will be 1 year since Serenity was released on the 30th. I still think it’s worth pimping.

Due 7th April 2007 (or 7-4-7 :) )

Apologies for blurry picture – ultrasound piccies are really hard to copy

Yes, it’s International Talk Like a Pirate Day (see also the UK page), so I’ve added a Wordpress plugin to make everything talk like a pirate for today.

My friend Neuro is also suggesting a Talk like Yoda Day, which is something I fully support.

Wiki-on-a-Stick

Friday, September 15th, 2006

Every now and then you come across a bit of software that is so simple, and yet brilliant. Wiki on a Stick is such a project. It’s a small wiki contained in a single html file and a single javascript file. (There are some graphics, but that’s it). Yes, you read right – only 1 html file. Every time you edit/save stuff, it gets added to that one file, although you still see it as a series of interlinked pages.

What makes this so brilliant is that you can stick it onto a USB key, and use it wherever you can access a web browser! Meaning you have your own little notebook, complete with proper wiki formatting and page linking, wherever you go. It’s truly great!

PS – on a side note there is now a link from http://planet.jedimoose.org to the Planet page, which is a little easier to remember ;)

Creating a Planet!

Friday, September 8th, 2006

No – I haven’t got a God complex ;) A planet site is a site that aggregates postings from a selected group of other sites. And I thought it might be nice to have a planet for all the subdomains on Jedimoose. Unfortunately you need to have an RSS feed for this to work, but if I’ve missed out someone who has a feed, and wants to be added, just let me know.

It’s still a work in progress, but you can view the feed at http://www.misterben.org.uk/planet/jedimoose/output/

School children and lateness

Monday, September 4th, 2006

After being habitually late for work ever since I started at the detestable “Utilities Company based in Scotland” I decided to make a special effort to get the ol’ carcass out of bed and make it to work on time.

This act of enthusiasm was successful for a good deal of the summer. But for the last few weeks it’s all went wrong.

And that’s because the schools are back.

Now these unwashed little freaks are getting on the bus WITH NO CORRECT CHANGE, endlessly faffing around with their money and carrying on while getting on the bus while they should be IN AN ORDERLY QUEUE WHILE THEY GO TO THEIR SEATS WITH THE MIMINUM OF FUSS.

Daily I’m torn between paying for their journey myself if it means getting to work faster or just booting the little feckers off the bus.

Or I could just get the earlier bus, but where’s the fun in that? A bit of irrational anger sets me up nicely for a day of at work.

Prize Time!

Monday, September 4th, 2006

Yes, it’s time for an extra special prize to be awarded. Early on Saturday morning Neuro posted the 1000th comment on JediMoose! So I’m going to buy him something special, like a Mars Bar, or a pint of Guinness ;) Congratulations Neuro.

On a related note, the next post on this page will also be the 500th post, meaning we’re at approximately 2 comments per post, which is not bad IMHO.

Lastly, you may notice that the slidey menus from the RHS aren’t sliding any more. This is due to a conflict with the JavaScript libraries that are also used in the new slidey ’show comments’ bit which I’ve added. Hopefully this will be resolved soon, but at least now you can view the comments on the main page.
