What podcasting isn’t…..

I’m generally a fan of Channel Fives ‘The Gadget Show’ – in the past they’ve done a couple of reasonable (not perfect, but pretty good) sections on Linux and Firefox. But in the show from last week they made a mistake that is getting made a lot, and is really frustrating me:

If you record a bunch of rubbish, create an MP3, and put it on the internet, you are _not_ podcasting. It only becomes podcasting if the method of distribution is via an RSS-feed and the corresponding podcasting client.

Thanks – you can go back to work enlightened now.

It’s not quite as annoying as people suggesting that Podcasting is something iPod-specific, though. It’s part of the reason why I really hate the name…

All of which is not as annoying as the Microsoft advert with the girl who doesn’t care about the breakup of her relationship because she’s going to write about it, make a record, and release it on the web. Or something. It makes my toes curl.

The Metro has a daily section where people pimp themselves in hope of a date by answering some questions. Yesterday, I happened to look at it and saw this:

What do you wish you had invented?
iPods. I mean, talk about genius.

? You mean the marketing bods at Mac are genius, surely?. Take a concept that’s been around for a few years (I think Diamond’s Rio was the first portable MP3 player in the UKabout 5 years ago), make it look like a fusion of tuperware and 70′s SF and tell everyone that unless they own one they’re not totally cool.

  4. I think that’s absolutely worth saying, and well said.

A podcast needs an RSS feed, otherwise it’s just a downloadable sound clip. I think there were some folks out there so eager to jump on the bandwagon, they never bothered to check what “podcasting” was…. ;-)
