I do my best to be an active member of the open source community - I try to promote good software, I report bugs, I try to write some code, and I may even do some documentation one day. But what I don’t expect is things like this email that I received this morning:

Whenever you ‘OK’ one of the popups (eg the Links one) Firefox throws a
Javascript error and does not close the popup.

The error is:
Deprecated method document.getSelection() called. Please use
window.getSelection() instead.

This is probably a simple fix (find
& replace ;) ), but I thought I would point it out.

+ This is a bug in HTMLArea I am guessing, since you did not state where
+ abouts it was. Also, because you did not specify a file to fix, I cannot
+ locate the error. Looks like unless you can tell me how to fix this in
+ the next few minutes, it will slip past 2.5.2 and therefore probably
+ never be fixed in 2.x, as 3.x is the next step after 2.5.2 - sorry.

Let’s point out some of the flaws in the reply, shall we?

  • The bug was reported on the 26th April, the reply requesting information was sent on the 21st June. If you wanted more information, why not ask for it a little sooner
  • “unless you can tell me how to fix this in the next few minutes” - if I could tell you how to fix it, I would have done so.
  • I’m not going to reply “in the next few minutes” when you send me an email at 1.34am. At least give me 24 hours to reply
  • Read my report carefully before responding - both in the title and in the text I make comment about the ‘Links’ popup, and yet the reply says I didn’t state where it was.
  • If you have been unable to replicate my problem, then say so in a way that assures me that you have at least tried to do so
  • I state a specific error about a specific javascript method that has been deprecated - it would take virtually no time at all to do a search for this method

I still like the software, but I think that the bug handling is less that satisfactory.

Rant over.
