Women gamers? Madness…

Yesterday, after dropping off some forms at Newton letting agency, I nipped into Games Workshop. It’s not the kind of place I go anymore as my Warhammer habit had died off long ago.

But I like to believe that one day I’ll have the drive to buy some more figures and break out the paints. I know it’s sad but I’m a geek after all.

But what impressed me was, as I checked out some of the new models and books, a woman was standing next to me showing the same level of interest! And she wasn’t a troll! Unbelievable.

It’s good to see women getting into any form of geekiness, and it warmed my heart.

Even though I realise that she’s probably buying stuff for her sad boyfriend/husband…

I too pop into Games Workshop and the Orc’s Nest (pretty good gaming shop in London) in the hope that one day I’ll actually be able to play LotR, WH40k, CoC and D&D instead of just letting the rulebooks pile up on my shelf.

I’ve spotted a couple of girls in Orc’s Nest browsing, and that’s not including the mums trailing after their over-excited 11 year old sons (I used to love going to GW when I was that age. Gaming shops were by far the best thing in town!)

Just the other day my wife revealed that in her teens she used to totally love going to the arcades and would spend about £20 a time! Suddenly the desire to get my PS2 down here is stronger than ever… though I’m sure she’ll whip me at the button-mashing fest that is Soul Calibur II. And she’ll probably beat me at GT3 too. Hmm… perhaps I should leave the PS2 in storage to save myself from shame.

Maybe I’ll challenge her to another game of Zombies!!! tonight, but without so much cheating on her part this time.
