On my daily browsing, because it’s the only way I stay sane in this job, I regularly check out a site called Newsarama.

They’re great for helping me stay up to date with what’s happening in the comic book world. There’s a new title beginning in July which I just HAVE to get…

Battle Pope!

Check out the preview, but be warned that some of the content is a touch on the “adult” side. Now that you have been warned, the preview is here.

That aside, Battle Pope looks like a whole lot of fun and is going to have to be bought next month.

Yesterday afternoon the church was running a fun day to raise money to send some kids to SU camp (or something). After helping with the setup it was down to Alan (Da Pasta) and myself to run the Giant Inflatable Slide for the everlasting delight of the kiddies.

All went well and it seems that the event was quite the success. Certainly we seem to have made upwards of £500.

Very cool. :)

Anyway, at the end of the event people were going on for free (it WAS at the end and we had made all the money we were going to get) and so the two Al’s decided to join in the fun.

On my second attempt, and I don’t EXACTLY remember how this happened, I reached the bottom of the slide quite abruptly and the back of my head made sharp contact with the ground underneath.

After the ringing in my ears died away I helped with taking stuff down.

It was then that I thought that a wee trip to A&E might be the order of the day after I realised that my jaw, which I had noticed wasn’t sitting well within my skull, hadn’t resumed it’s original comfortable position.

After a few hours in A&E with Da Pasta as my erstwhile waiting room companion, I was told (after the compulsory X-ray) that my jaw wasn’t broken/fractured/dislocated and that it would eventually settle down into it’s previously comfy position.

All good.

It’s a shame that even with the liberal doses of Ibuprofen it’s still sore as hell, incredibly uncomfortable and practically impossible to eat with.

Looks like it the liquid diet for me. ;)

Well - I’m back. I’ve spent a weekend in glorious Wolverhampton with some wonderful people. So - how was it, what happened, and what did I think? Here goes:

What Happened
We (that is, me, neuro, pickle and jriddell) arrived in Wolverhampton and managed to find the hotel (which was a relief) by about 7pm. The front door was locked, so we rang the bell for attention. There was a phone on the wall which rang, and I answered. It appears the hotelier was ill in bed, and there was a key hidden by the door, and that our room keys were on the front desk with instructions as to where the rooms are. The Baron’s Court Hotel is idonsyncratic, but lovely. I particularly liked Barney, the resident marigold-blue macaw, although we spectularly failed to teach him any of the good phrases from Enemy Territory.

Friday evening we headed out to the HogsHead for drinks with the LUGRadio faithful (having already met some of them - kNo, Russ and Jen, Xalior and Lejt, Aquarion and kryptops were all staying in the hotel too - plus some I’ve probably forgotten). The HogsHead in Wolverhampton actually does table service for food and drinks - it is like no other pub. Upon leaving the HogsHead (on the way to a club) I did a foolish thing - I helped finish off a drink (it was going to waste) known as ‘TVR’ - Tequila, Vodka and Red Bull. I shall not be drinking it again, as it was the main cause of some stunning digestive pyrotechnics that night, and again the following morning. In fact, I could not eat or drink anything but water for the next 12 hours :(

Saturday morning arrived and we headed off to the venue - me still a little the worse for wear. Upon arrival I was greeted by a smiling davee, which cheered me up no end. Omahn was also there setting up neon - our Enemy Territory server.

The event itself passed really quickly - I managed to catch a couple of talks, buy some clothes, play some Enemy Territory, and did my best to meet a load of folk that I’ve talked to but never met.

The end of the event was the stunning live recording of LUGRadio, which was hilarious. Plus I was awarded £100 of O’Reilly books for services to the LR community, which was totally unexpected. So I now have a nice shelf of Linux books, and a lovely trophy built by yonkeltron from Philadelphia, which I need to be careful with as I have to return it next year.

In the evening, having been back to the hotel, freshened up, checked email, etc, we headed out to the Standard for a curry. We had a great time, although the service was better on our table than some others, and they royally screwed up the bill. But other than that it was OK. Sunday was a lazy morning (after a full English breakfast :) ) and then the drive home.

The people
The best thing about something like this is meeting all the people that you have spent 12 months talking to on IRC and the forums - you know these people, but you’re finally meeting their ‘meatspace’ ;) And it was great - the LUGRadio community has some fantastic people, and, for all that the internet is a great communication medium, face-to-face is something special. I was just sad that I didn’t get to meet everybody I wanted to - but there were apparently 250 people there at one point, so maybe it wasn’t surprising.

The Review
It would be easy to talk about the things that weren’t perfect (I’m not going to say “were wrong”, because that would be inaccurate) about LRL. But I’m not going to. I had a fabulous time. I met some wonderful people (most of whom I already knew were wonderful). I bought stuff. I saw stuff. I met a man who has been in space (Mark Shuttleworth rules!). I drank beer and ate curry. LUGRadio Live was everything it had promised to be, and a whole lot more.

There will be a LRL 2006, I am sure of it. It will probably be bigger, better, (possibly even more scrotal*), but it won’t be LRL 2005. It was the first. And I was there, at the beginning of an era. It makes me proud.

* in joke for the LR crowd

Oh. Dear. Me.

This is, at the same time, one of the funniest and one of the worst films I have ever seen.

The story follows the “what would happen if fictional characters discover that they’re fictional and journey to the real world and meet their creators while attempting to halt the destruction of their world” theme.

And David Warner is in it as the evil wizard/alchemist, Dr. Pea. I have high regard for Warner and he’s excellent in everything I’ve seen him in.

He also goes a long way to saving this film. :)

The bottom line is that if you like the League’s televisual offerings you’ll most probably enjoy the film. It’s not the most intellectual movie I’ve seen and there are plenty of knob jokes to keep you going.

An interesting follow up to my previous 2 posts on usability is this site: www.dontclick.it, which removes clicking from the interface entirely. Feels very slick, although I’m not sure about overall usability.

It was with great sadness that I learned this morning of the death of Richard Whiteley. Countdown has always been a favourite show of mine - I watched it for a number of years with my parents when I came home from school. Being a typical geek I always did better at the numbers than the letters, but generally was bested by my Father. I did get the occasional conundrum before him, though. :)

His dress sense was awful, his sense of pun abysmal. But he was a great man, and I will miss him.

The League Of Gentlemen’s Apocalypse.

Oh, the excitement never ends. ;)

I’m not expecting much, although I did enjoy the tv series. It’ll be an hour and a half of nonsense and sometimes that’s all that matters.

And hopefully, sometime soon, the wife and I will be going to see Batman Begins…

Can’t believe it’s finally time! In about 20 minutes I leave for LUGRadio Live! and I am enormously excited. A special mention here to Barons Court Hotel who are putting up with me and a load of other LRL visitors for the weekend, including the ‘after-show party’ tomorrow night.

It’s going to be wild! *boing*

Had a quality night in with the wife last night. She introduced me to a band called Frou Frou and their album Details. Well worth a listen.

Dug a bit more into the Battletech rulebook (no Bt game last night but she has professed an interest in playing it in the future. Result!), settled down to some of Ruth’s quality Spag Bol, watched Wrath of Khan (again) and played some Advanced Connect 4.

A nice relaxing eveing.

Also explained more of the revised plan for the novel. It’s going in a direction I didn’t expect (as usual) and she was making all the right encouraging noises. Which is always nice.

I’m going to dedicate some time this weekend to finishing some of it off. By Monday I’m hoping to be another few chapters up.

We’ve added a new name to the Moose family - Noelinho has transferred his existing site over. Enjoy.

We are working on a new style for the main page - something really stylish ;) Hopefully we’ll get something up within the next 4-6 weeks.

Lastly, we are working on a new subdomain ourselves - but it’s a secret at the moment. We’ll keep you posted ;)

Well, that’s the Introduction to BattleTech out the way.

I’m in two minds about talking Ruth in to playing a wee game (using the quickstart rules, if I can find all the stuff that goes along with it), or just soldiering on to the main Rulebook and investing in a battletech map and a couple of miniatures.

The first option isn’t too likely (of convincing Ruth OR finding the Quickstart game stuff) and the second option means I can dig out all my old paints (which I used for painting my Warhammer 40K troops) and gives me an excuse to buy a couple of mechs.

Not that I need an excuse you understand…

I’ve just finished Storm Warriors by Brian Craig, which is part of the Orfeo Trilogy (Games Workshop’s Warhammer setting). Like the first two, and so many more, the review is in progress. ;)

What I’ve started at the moment proves that I’m too far down the path of Geekdom to ever turn back.

What I’m reading at the moment is:

Introduction To BattleTech

leading on to

The BattleTech Rulebook

and then

BattleTech Master Rules.

Wow. What a geek.

So, at lunch today, I’ll be reading Introduction To Battletech, proudly procaiming to the world at large that I am a geek.

What surprises me though, is the reactions of the others in the office when they see me reading this stuff.

So far I’ve worked through a JavaScript HowTo guide, The Day of the Beast Call of Cthulhu campaign book, numerous graphic novels and comics (all with bags and backing boards) and never a comment was made or eyebrow raised.

But bring in the rulebook for a tabletop gaming system and they all start looking at me like I’m not from round here. (Folks from round here ain’t from round here… never mind…)

Is this some kind of feeble, and late, April Fool joke?

Apparently not.

Seemingly Michael Grade, the man who was responsible for ridding us of Doctor Who in the late Eighties, now tunes in with his young son. And both are big fans.

Eh? Is this some kind of Bizzaro World?

If it is or not doesn’t matter. Such is the power of the Doc, even his arch-enemies can’t help but love him…

Along with the housemove, I have the additional opportunity to redefine/reconfigure the Thorp Family Network ;) but this is easier said that done. As I may have mentioned, I run Smoothwall on an old PC acting as the firewall and DHCP server for the house. I am 100% happy with Smoothwall as a product, but as a piece of hardware this box has one major problem when it comes to the new flat - size. It resides in a large tower case, which is likely to be far too big for the new house. Thus I come to my decisions:

  1. Keep with the old box, and find a clever place to hide it in the flat
  2. Keep with the old hardware, but put it in a new, smaller, case
  3. Keep with Smoothwall, but buy a smaller PC off eBay to run it on
  4. Replace the whole lot with an all-in-one piece of hardware. Most likely would be this offering from Linksys, which runs on Linux, and for which you can get a whole load of goodies

I am leaning towards (4) at the moment, although (3) has some merit. (2) is too much like hard work when we’re trying to move house. (1) is still an option, although I will need to go and measure some spaces ;)

Any thoughts/comments/experiences are more than welcome.

I do my best to be an active member of the open source community - I try to promote good software, I report bugs, I try to write some code, and I may even do some documentation one day. But what I don’t expect is things like this email that I received this morning:

Bug #: 66 (http://www.websitebaker.org/bugs/bug.php?op=show&bugid=66)

Whenever you ‘OK’ one of the popups (eg the Links one) Firefox throws a
Javascript error and does not close the popup.

The error is:
Deprecated method document.getSelection() called. Please use
window.getSelection() instead.

This is probably a simple fix (find
& replace ;) ), but I thought I would point it out.

+ This is a bug in HTMLArea I am guessing, since you did not state where
+ abouts it was. Also, because you did not specify a file to fix, I cannot
+ locate the error. Looks like unless you can tell me how to fix this in
+ the next few minutes, it will slip past 2.5.2 and therefore probably
+ never be fixed in 2.x, as 3.x is the next step after 2.5.2 - sorry.

Let’s point out some of the flaws in the reply, shall we?

  • The bug was reported on the 26th April, the reply requesting information was sent on the 21st June. If you wanted more information, why not ask for it a little sooner
  • “unless you can tell me how to fix this in the next few minutes” - if I could tell you how to fix it, I would have done so.
  • I’m not going to reply “in the next few minutes” when you send me an email at 1.34am. At least give me 24 hours to reply
  • Read my report carefully before responding - both in the title and in the text I make comment about the ‘Links’ popup, and yet the reply says I didn’t state where it was.
  • If you have been unable to replicate my problem, then say so in a way that assures me that you have at least tried to do so
  • I state a specific error about a specific javascript method that has been deprecated - it would take virtually no time at all to do a search for this method

I still like the software, but I think that the bug handling is less that satisfactory.

Rant over.

Last episode of Doctor Who on Saturday and it was a belter. A full review when I get the dvd…

I think I actually cried once or twice. (I have a lot of emotional investment in the series.)

I’m going to miss Christopher Eccleston and the Doctor and I’m sure that the new guy, David Tennant, will do a fine job in filling his shoes.

The bummer is waiting for the boxed set in November, the Christmas special and the new series next year. Time to dig out all the Doctor Who novels, methinks…

Well, that’s the move done. Phew.

Many thanks to mrBen, Guy Incognito, Supergingerman, Cheezy, Lorna and especially Allen (the ginga ninja) for providing a van at the last minute!

Most of the guff we own has now been sorted away and it remains that we get a few more bookcases for the last of the clutter.

The phone was sorted this afternoon and sometime in the next few weeks we’ll sort out the broadband.

Stress? What stress? :)

Well - our flat is officially on the market, offers over £75,000. Sign outside the front door and everything. The schedule should be ready by the middle of this week.

[edit]And we have our first viewing today :) [/edit]

I still can’t quite believe it’s all happening; even though it’s far from over, and there are a whole load of hurdles to be jumped, it’s just all been incredible - a real feeling that God has done this for us, and exceeded my expectations by such a vast margin; far beyond what I dreamed for this year, let alone what I deserved.

By the time we are sitting in our new flat, it’s going to be close on 5 years to the day that I sat not 500 yards from it, in the living room of our rented flat on Squire St and cried over Alan’s shoulder because I could not see out of the financial mire that we had managed to get into, mostly through things that were not our fault. It all seemed so hopeless. Miracles do happen.

….the we have (finally!) moved to our new server. DNS propogation takes a wee while, so not everyone will get here immediately, but if you can see this, then you’re allowed to post again….. [edit] Whoops - there was a little mixup with regards to how much space we had, which meant that there may have been issues last night for some people wanting to add stuff. Should all be resolved now. [/edit] mrBen (6 Comments)
