OK – here is the idea that is going to make me millions. Or rather, it would if I could get the credit for it. But remember – you heard it here first. Unless you heard it elsewhere.
We’ve all seen MMORPGs – Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games, and we’ve all seen FPSs – First Person Shooters. My plan is to combine the two into a massive MMORPFPSG!! Basically the idea is this: you have a first person shooter, much like Enemy Territory or Counter-Strike, which is basically objectives-based: capture this town, defuse this bomb, defend this thing, however, and here is the clever bit, the objectives for each place are defined at the wide-view level of the MMORPG. Thus if you like MMORPGs you can play this side of the game, but the squads that you are commanding may consist all or part of real people who are playing an FPS.
Of course – there are a lot of details to fill out, but that’s the basic concept. I think it’d be cool. The other half of the concept is to basically create a single world online, rather than multiple maps ‘n’ stuff, whereby a server may host a particular FPS set of maps, but they relate to the world as a whole. Thus all the servers work in collaboration with each other to run the game, and everyone is actually playing together.
I think it’d be cool.

I think Star Wars Galaxies might be like that.
It’s a MMORPG but has the running, jumping, fighting, killing parts of any good FPS. And one of the expansions gives you starfighters and space travel/combat.
But I think it’s expensive to buy and run with the monthly subscription.
Does it have seperation of duties? That is one of the keys to my idea – FPS guys just play FPS, MMORPG guys just play MMORPG.
There’s a similar (but not the same) division in the game “Savage” (I think it’s here (s2games.com), I can’t check because game sites are blocked by the proxy server here at work; and yes, it’s 9:43pm here, and I’m still at work) — it got a bit of press last year when it came out because it had a Linux version off the shelf, a bit of a rarity.
It was not really a MMORPG; but it was a cross between the “Starcraft/Warcraft” RTS and the standard FPS. That is, you could play either the commander, in which you had your peons build buildings and such, al a *arcraft, or you could play a soldier, in which case you were in FPS mode, wandering to the enemy base to attempt to destroy its soldiers, its peons, and its buildings. Also, while you are a FPS player, the commander can give you “orders” which you can follow (for the good of the team) or ignore (you maverick, you!). I played it a few times; it was fairly well done.
But I think your idea would be more interesting. Maybe someone will try that sometime.
is this not just paint-balling by email?
