Well, id Software finally released the Linux binaries for Doom3, along with a demo. Downloaded and installed last night for a bit of play. Only had 30 minutes, so didn’t get very far in, plus if I’m going to do any serious gaming, then I will need to replace my monitor – the brightness is all the way up, and I still need to set gamma correction. Anyway – first impression is excellent. The game has a Half-Life feel to it – that kind of all-encompassing feeling that draws you in. I haven’t got to any of the scary bits yet, but I reckon it will scare the crap out of me – very atmospheric. The graphics (or rather, what I could see of them on my dark monitor) are excellent. Controls are fairly standard, but the addition of a ‘PDA’ which holds your mission information has been nicely implemented.
Hopefully I’ll be able to finish the demo over the next 10-14 days, and decide whether or not I want to splash out on the full game.

I think the darkness is actually part of the plot. There are areas which are supposed to be in complete darkness unless you’ve got the flashlight on them, I believe. Ask PerfDave, he’s played it a lot …
Yeah, darkness does a lot to add the admosphere. Duct-tape mod is for weenies!
