I’ll be a crazed killer then…

Friday, July 30th, 2004

So. Here we go again.

A 17 yr old boy brutally kills a 14 yr old boy and the killer’s parents blame it on the game “Manhunt”. Now they, and the victim’s parents, want to ban a whole selection of violent games.

Okay then.
I have a few thoughts about this.

  • If someone is going to hurt or kill another human being then they’re going to do it anyway. They don’t need instruction from a computer game, a role-playing game, a comic book, a film or from television.
  • The boy must have had some kind of psychological issues because it’s just not done to kill someone else, even if he did get the idea from a game, or book, or comic, or film…
  • He was seventeen years old. The game had an eighteen certificate. Only one year out, but then that’s the law.
  • The parents must be held responsible to a certain degree. Period.
  • Why ban the game? It’s just another knee-jerk reaction which serves no long term purpose. There will alway be another violent game. There will always be another violent death. The game will always be blamed.
  • Yeah, and the guy’s 17 for crying out loud. If he doesn’t know the difference between fantasy and reality then this should have been picked up long before now.
  • What were is parents doing? Did they raise him correctly, instilling in him any kind of moral code? You, know the kind of moral code which says THAT KILLING PEOPLE IS WRONG.

and finally…

  • I play computer games, some violent, some not. I play(ed) role-playing games, I’m not a devil-worshipper. I listen to (amongst other things) Heavy Metal music. I read comics. I enjoy Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror books, films and television. I have not harmed another human being in all my years on this planet (Okay, this isn’t strictly true but I’m pretty sure they deserved some of it…). I have never tortured animals. I don’t hate people. Generally I’m quite an nice chap.

Sorry, I was building up to quite a rant there.

It’s just that if you’re going to ban computer games for being violent then go all the way.

Why not ban violent films, books, games, and comics.
Ban soap operas. They’re full of horrendous people doing horrible things to each other.
Ban Big Brother. This time they’re encouraging negative behaviour.

And once all these things have been banned, you will still find violent behaviour in our society. Because if someone has it in their mind to brutally kill another human being, they’ll find an excuse from somewhere.

Whoo! Payday!

Thursday, July 29th, 2004

After a five-week month, and the joys of being completely skint for most of it, it’s payday and for today I have loads of money. Tomorrow, of course, it’ll all be gone on those pesky things called bills…

But on Saturday (after buying a wedding ring) a wee visit to Forbidden Planet will be in order to pick up the monthly comics order. Ah, it really is the simple things in life I enjoy; reading stories about people with odd powers dressing strangely and fighting other people with equally elaborate clothing.
There’s nothing quite like it… ;)

And tomorrow night I’ll be at Edgy’s to talk about the Stag Night plans. I’m happy to go out for a bite to eat and a wee drinky after, but I may end that night with oddly painted body parts and/or being strategically shaved. Hopefully I’ll have left before they get suitably drunk enough to do this..

Removing IE

Thursday, July 29th, 2004

Found this interesting little article which explains how to remove IE from your system entirely (including routing system calls to your alternative browser (most likely Firefox))
Not for the faint-hearted, but an interesting technical exercise given that MS swear (often in court) that it can’t be done………

Keeping the Adventure going…

Wednesday, July 28th, 2004

A while ago I came up with the (possibly ill-advised?) idea of creating my own text adventure game.

Why?

Well back in the day, when I owned a Sinclair ZX Spectrum, I loved playing text adventures and even wrote a few as well. They were simple and not particularly good, but it was the creativity of the story and the locations that I enjoyed mostly. The programming, such as it was, was a neccessary evil and my lack of interest at the time explained why the games were so bad.

So who’s going to program it?

Hopefully mrBen will be instrumental in helping with the engine. But that’s quite a way off yet.

How far have you got?

I’ve about 90+ locations at the moment with around half of them fleshed out. The characters, objects and dialogue are coming at a slower pace and the story line is still being worked on, as is the quest list.

Why are you talking to yourself like this?

Isn’t this how it’s done? :)

When will it be ready?

Ah, ha, ha, hah. Nice one.

Skype

Wednesday, July 28th, 2004

Just thought I would put a quick mention in for Skype. Skype is a VoIP – Voice over IP – client. This is basically a piece of software that you can use to make phone calls over the internet, thus saving you the cost of the phone call. You can get it, free, for Linux, Windows and Mac (soon). Even better, the ‘calls’ you make to other Skype users are absolutely free.

There is also a pay service which means that you can call people who don’t have Skype (or even computers) for the cost of a local call. Yes – you can call someone on the other side of the world for the cost of a local call. Oh, and it’s all encrypted so Big Brother can’t touch you ;) and you can make conference calls too.

Anyway, it all looks pretty cool. You can call me on the id benthorp (assuming I have it running at the time) , although I don’t have a mike plugged in yet……

Having some fun

Tuesday, July 27th, 2004

One of the most frequently cited reasons for not using Linux on a desktop/home machine has always been the lack of games. In fact, even now some people think that this is the case. Let me introduce you to a couple of games you may have heard of that I have been playing natively under Linux recently:

Enemy Territory – from the makers of Return to Castle Wolfenstein (which also has a Linux client) comes a free online multiplayer game using the same engine. Very much a team game, with different roles laid out within the team, this game is awesome. A big download if you’re on a slower connection (forget 56k), but worth the wait. I may suck at the game, but I still love playing :)

Unreal Tournament (2003) – with the Linux installer actually on the game disk, I was delighted to be able to pick up a preowned copy of this from the Blockbuster GameStation. Looks fantastic (screenshots to follow), and runs like a dream on my new box.

It’s good to see more and more gaming companies committing themselves to Linux clients; many of them have to provide Linux editions of their server software as most of the net runs on Linux.

On an unrelated note, the Freely Project has now reached 65 members :)

Lastly, for this post, it was sad to see Google struggling under the load of an attack from the MyDoom.O virus. Please ensure that you are either running an OS that is not readily susceptible to viruses, or that you at least have decent AV software installed and that you update and scan regularly. If you can’t afford to buy Norton (or similar) then checkout AVG from Grisoft or ClamAV.

Uru: Ages Beyond Myst – First impressions

Monday, July 26th, 2004

Got Uru on Saturday. Oh, good golly gosh, it’s good.

Don’t ask me what the storyline is or what the final goal is, because I’m not really sure.
Where the first three Myst games (Myst, Riven, Exile) had a point (1. rescuing Atrus, 2. rescuing Catherine, 3. rescuing the Releeshan book) this one looks more geared towards keeping the fans of the Myst universe happy by giving them a game that has history, Ages to explore and secrets to learn.

But there’s no bad guy to defeat, no great prize to be won, no power or glory to achieve.
For me the beauty of the Myst games is the incredibly inventive locations and the depth they shoe-horn into each game. And it would have been better if the Uru: Live concept hadn’t died a death.

Anyway, I’m getting ahead of myself here.

Uru is great. It’s full of puzzles, atmosphere and turnips. (Ah, no. Maybe not.)
But it’s early days yet. I’ve just started playing Uru and there loads more to do. I’ll see how I feel about it after a couple of hours of it tonight.

Welcome to the new-look Jedimoose

Monday, July 26th, 2004

We have decided to move away from the Blosxom weblog system, and onto WordPress, which we hope will give us opportunity to expand and improve the site even further.

You can find the old site, which will be retained as an archive, at http://www.jedimoose.org/archive.cgi.

We look forward to hearing your comments on the new look :)
